Nordstan’s Transformation: From Backside to a New Front

The iconic Nordstan shopping center in central Gothenburg is undergoing a major transformation ahead of the opening of Västlänken. A passage from the underground train station will lead directly to northern Nordstan, which is set to become a welcoming meeting place.

“Navigating the space should be effortless for those rushing to catch a train, while also offering a moment of pause—a place to run errands, soak in the lively atmosphere, or simply watch the world go by,” says Per Norberg, lead architect in Gothenburg.

Intensive Phase
The Gothenburg-based office began collaborating with Nordstan in 2022. When the detailed plan for northern Nordstan was finalized in June 2024, the project entered a more intensive phase. Okidoki Architects is drawing inspiration from Gothenburg’s rich industrial heritage for the façade design of the entrance building. Inside, Wester+Elsner Architects is reimagining northern Nordstan with inviting, dynamic spaces designed to elevate the visitor experience.

Safe Even at Night
In a public space like this, creating comfort and safety for visitors is especially important, notes Alexandra Clason, another architect on the project:
“Abundant natural daylight will flood the space during the day through the expansive glass façade, creating a warm and open atmosphere. By night, thoughtfully designed lighting will ensure the area remains welcoming and safe for all visitors.”

Västlänken Opens in 2026
The redevelopment of northern Nordstan is expected to be completed by December 2026, coinciding with the opening of Västlänken.

Helena Lindqvist, CEO of Nordstan, concludes:
“With the opening of Västlänken, we anticipate a significant boost in visitor traffic. Our vision is to turn this opportunity into a remarkable experience, making the new northern entrance a vibrant gateway to everything Nordstan has to offer.”
